Wayfaring
04:03
|
|||
I am a poor wayfaring stranger
I am a dog
I am a light
I am the sound, low and gentle
Carrying through the house tonight
I am a king, cruel and foolish
I am a wolf
I am a deer
I am the place in the distance
That isn’t home, but somewhere near
Where did you go
Where did you come from
I am your wayfaring stranger
A little frog you hear at night

Winter Visitor
04:56
|
|||
Wintering out in between
The sharper ends of the dream
Trading songs til one so brutal and so bold
Watching the molecules slow
Into rain then into snow
But when a man’s in love he feels no cold
Any hunger that keeps us from under the ground
Winter, oh
In your cocoon winter coat
Under your plumage of smoke
Winter with me
Take me up silently
Slake my heart
February comes like a bird
Against the grey morning blur
Unfledged, falling premature from the nest
To the earth
The same hunger will keep us from under the ground
Winter, oh
In your cocoon winter coat
Under your plumage of smoke
Winter with me
Even if spring will be stillborn

Communion Wine
03:23
|
|||
What would you say to me if I said to you
We should leave
Just up and go
We could swim into the Midsummer
My friend
My willow
Reflect in the river
No cloud in the sky
The sunlight pours down
Out of our eyes
We’ll stay outside into the night
Stay up drinking communion wine
Grass stains on your ankles
Grass seeds in my hair
Cutting our swathe through strange and ancient air
The blisters on our hearts
We’ll cast them from our minds
And raise a cup of kindness
Raise a cup of wine
Next to the stream we’ll sit and weep
And hang our harps on willow trees
Into the stream / Into this dream

Smoke
04:27
|
|||
If even the weariest river eventually
Winds somewhere safe to sea
Then we, me and you
We will wind down somehow too
Watching to see which way it will go
Blowing smoke out the window
I’m not afraid of taking aim
Lighting matches, lighting flames
Ashtray to ashtray, lust to lust
And grinding teeth into dust
Waking up is holy terror
I know it’s hard to let yourself be seen
Heart open and eyes closed
Naked but not exposed
Watching to see which way it will go
Blowing smoke out the window
I’m not afraid of taking aim
Lighting matches, lighting flames
Ashtray to ashtray, lust to lust
From what you can to what you must
Ain’t that the way
It takes so much prevarication just to say:
"It’s been a fucking lovely day
I’m glad you came to stay"

"Fear"
05:46
|
|||
Shipwrecked and blue in the ice
Casting my dice to the sea
Imagining shapes in the stars over me
And I float singing words I learned by rote
Crystalline and clear
So I don’t hear
Until you say: "fear"
Something just wilts behind your eyes
Something happens inside your brain
I look up at you like a dog
Asking its master to stop the rain
A lost ship, a phoenix
And a never be
And strings that we don’t see
Pull you from above
In and out of love

Bronco
05:04
|
|||
Waxwing’s been and gone
The rains will arrive and unload and move on
A runaway only gets so far
But the poem we are once it starts never ends
Just gives way to silence
When you reach the end of your breath
But that’s not the end
And lying on your chest I listen to your breath
Deep and slow like footsteps in snow
Like a bronco back in stable after the rodeo
So when you ask me what I’m thinking of
I tell you the truth
I say: ‘nothing at all’
To be in love and never know what it is you love
Or why there’s nothing on your mind
Well I guess love is mercy
Love is a view of the whole from the middle
And I am a relic carved in your heart
Old and new like déja vu
Like footsteps in footprints already made
So we could keep writing poetry
But what would that be
Against the wind ripping through the trees

Free
02:50
|
|||
Would you roll me a number
I had the strangest dream
Burning off my fingerprints
In a bonfire of vanities
So if you ever need me I’m more or less free
Amaranthus growing in out and through my chest
And like a bulletproof vest
I can take half a dozen hits at best
And I wish my dreams would just let me get sleep
All I need is some decent sleep
And I will be more or less free
By the time the scaffolding has been taken down
You tell me I will be
Heart-hardened and more or less free

Goat and Whisky
05:51
|
|||
And I would circle round the way that I feel
In the words of a dead Frenchman
And as I stumble on symbols
You would listen so carefully
You always had a special way
I had no shadow of conviction
You kissed me on the crook of my arm
And from inside a haze of cough syrup and comedown malaise
You looked down on me like something had changed
We could lock all the doors and windows
We could refuse to leave this bed
You know I don’t have any solution
But if you need somewhere to rest your head
Maybe I’ll see you down the road
When it’s not like it was before
You would not believe how much I’ve missed you
Knock on my door and I’ll knock on yours
My love

The Border
05:33
|
|||
When the snow comes we’ll fly south
Get some sun on our scars
And I will brook the interval
From where you used to be to where you are
Could we put the world behind us
Til the border disappears
Could we keep each other up all night
Could you love me without fear
You’ll be relieved to see the back of me
And I’ll be relieved to see the back of you
You will have my heart forever
Just put your ear to the ground
And you’ll hear that sound
And when you wake up tomorrow
The sky will still be here
The clouds and the smoke won’t have cleared
And when you wake up tomorrow
The birds will still be here
The horse and the frog, the wolf and the deer
And if I’m gone
I won’t be far
I won’t be long
